Koç University was founded in 1993 by the Vehbi Koç Foundation as a non-profit foundation university. It began teaching in temporary buildings in İstinye and in 2000 moved to the Rumelifeneri Campus in the north of Istanbul, overlooking the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. Its School of Medicine started admitting students in 2010, and Koç University Hospital is located in Topkapı.

All courses are taught in English. The university has more than 8,000 students, and about 60% of them live in campus dormitories right next to the academic buildings. With around 300 partner universities in 60 countries, it has a strong exchange network and is especially well known in business, economics and engineering.
